Disco, My Mother and The Brazilian Stacked Heel

I love fashion. And I love shoes. When I was little my mother had a pair of Brazilian stacked heels. It was the 1970s and they were black suede with a cutout toe. I used to play dress up in them. They were so beautiful.

But my mother is not a packrat. She does not carry that gene which forces one to keep everything out of sentimentality or a need to hoard.

As a small child, I vividly remember finding garbage bags destined for Goodwill containing her wedding dress (a red velvet mini later worn to my Junior Prom), various early 1970s formals and innumerable pairs of high heels. Apparently she no longer had a need for such things as a mother of two in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Salvaging what I could in the back of the car en route to the donation center, I managed to save much of the lot. But the shoes were lost; destined to exist only in my memory.

So I present to you my mother's Brazilian stacked heel disco shoes (now in red), a beret (from my great Aunt Octavine) and a Diane von Furstenberg wrap-around dress I remember my mother wearing when we went out somewhere fancy.
My tribute to fashion through my childhood self.

I love this, my Mother wore an elegant 3/4 length sleeve jacket with a fur collar in a chic champagne mattelasse, with gold lurex threads and a sheath dress underneath. She looked and smelled glamourous to me. I wish I had it today. Her shoes were satin pumps.
Love to see your piles on your desk!

That outfit is so glam! I love the beret, too.

I remember begging my mother to buy me a pair of Norma Kamali suede wedges that laced up the leg with thin cords. I was way too young to wear them, but bless her heart, she bought them for me.

There were some special shoes back in the day. Maybe you can find those shoes again in a great vintage store.

Isn't it funny what we hold on to? My mother dressed like Jackie Kennedy every day: well-cut suit with a short skirt and high heels.

Have you thought of maybe having a pair of shoes like those you remember commissioned (I feel I misspelled that)?

Beautiful piece! Your Mom and I must be about the same age :) I can't believe some of the platforms I wore back then! LOL They were affectionately known around our house as "ankle breakers" :)

Too fun...I wish I had been more of a pack rat...there are some things I would have loved to show my daughter.

Same with some of my mothers things that went to goodwill...you write very well...I enjoyed reading this post.

Very nice. You've made me muse about what makes those of us feel the need to hoard our many treasures and hold onto tangible items of memories... while others remarkably let go of everything. Oh, plus I love shoes as well... I HAD to have a pair of rigid high heeled Candie's in 6th grade and never could walk in them. ;)

Another lovely piece! I'm jealous, there isn't a single fashionista gene in my entire heritage, but we got in line twice for the curls!

Delving memories - and searching for those red shoes - has given such a fine story!
Though I am not that much into fashion, I share your interest for Art Deco, though my favorite expression is architecture. I live in Paris and when I stroll my eyes are always looking for the beautiful straight lines of Art Deco buildings.
Thank you for your comment in my blog.

Wow, I really loved this post! I had a great-great Aunt Olivine, but I love the name of your Aunt Octavine! We have a ton in common, by the way, I love Belle & Sebastian too! :D

I love this piece! Your style is so crisp and sophisticated, yet it still captures a narrative! You are extremely talented! :)

And way to salvage all the treasures! That's exactly what I'd be doing!

You can tell your mother is amazing, just from the fact that she wore a red velvet mini as a wedding dress. Oh yeah, shall I even mention the Diane von Furstenberg?

Oh my God, I WISH my mother would have kept her entire wardrobe from her 60's into 70's era! Considering we are the same stature and she was a fashion maven, I would have revelled in her things. She did pass along as awesome denim trench coat that is snug that I wear with funky boots or heels around this time of year :) Anyway, I love your work, it's fabulous!
